India's cabinet committee on security on Wednesday approved the purchase of 36 fighter jets from France's Dassault, a senior Indian defence ministry official said.
"The deal was approved at the meeting in the evening. It will now be formally signed by Indian and French defence ministers on September 23 in New Delhi," the uamed official told AFP.
The official said that other details including the exact amount and formalities "will become clear after the signing event".
According to local media reports, the Indian govement has agreed to pay around $8.8 billion for the fighter jets.
The purchase of Rafale aircraft, which will replace part of the country's ageing air force fleet, was first mooted in 2012 and the deal was signed in January 2016.
India entered exclusive negotiations on buying 126 of the fighters four years ago, but the number of planes was scaled back during tortuous negotiations over the cost and assembly of the planes in India.

France’s Green Party is struggling to gain political momentum eight months before the first round of the country’s presidential elections, even as the ruling Socialist Party takes a pummelling in opinion polls.
France’s Europe Ecology-The Greens (EELV) party will hold a two-round primary on October 19 and November 7 to pick a nominee for next year’s all-important presidential poll, but so far the inteal race has failed to pique the public’s interest.
Cécile Duflot, who resigned as President François Hollande’s housing minister in 2014, is the favourite in the primary, which also includes European MPs Karima Delli, Yaick Jadot and Michèle Rivasi. Duflot is by far the most prominent of the four candidates, but recent opinion polls predict she will ea less than 5 percent support in the general election.

The wife of former French president Jacques Chirac was admitted to hospital Wednesday “to rest and recuperate” on the same day a prominent French politician falsely aounced on Twitter that her husband had died.
Beadette Chirac, 83, was said to be “exhausted” following her husband’s hospitalisation for a lung infection, the couple’s son-in-law Frédéric Salat-Baroux told AFP.
The news follows the Twitter aouncement by former French housing minister Christine Boutin that Jacques Chirac, also 83, had died on Wednesday. His family denied the rumour.
"President Chirac is being treated for a lung infection and I want to pay homage to the exceptional quality of the medical teams," Salat-Baroux, who was the former president’s chief of staff from 2005 to 2007, said in response to Boutin’s tweet – “Mort de #Chirac” – that caused widespread outrage on the social network.

Far-right leader Marine Le Pen on Saturday named the young politician David Rachline as the director of her presidential campaign, a risky choice who should appeal to party loyalists, while she reaches out to a broader audience.
Le Pen made the widely expected aouncement during a speech to supporters in the Mediterranean city of Fréjus in an event that, by her own account, marked “the start of the mobilization for this presidential campaign”.
Rachline, 28, has been the mayor of Fréjus since April 2014 and the youngest member of France’s Senate since October of the same year. A ceremony to honour the victims of terrorism was held in Paris Monday, with French President François Hollande leading tributes to those killed, injured and bereaved in the recent spate of attacks.
Addressing an audience of victims, the bereaved, politicians and officials at the historic Invalides military museum, Hollande promised to boost compensation and to step up the fight against terrorism.
"We must ensure that sustained action is taken to anticipate attacks, deter them and stop them. It's a constant battle and it will need even more resources," he said.
The French president’s speech was followed by a solemn reading of the names of the victims of the attacks carried out by Islamist extremists last year in Paris and in July in Nice.

French authorities took a teenager in for questioning on Monday over a false terror alert that mobilised dozens of police officers in Paris on Saturday. Two adolescents had been brazenly bragging about the hoax online.
On Saturday, French police received a call from a certain “Father Mathis” claiming ten armed men had entered Saint-Leu-Saint-Gilles church in central Paris and taken about twenty people hostage. Not only are the pranksters good impersonators, they also reportedly the church’s phone number to make it look as if the call was coming from inside the church itself.
According to joualists at the French news magazine L’Obs, police had a long conversation with the caller, trying to determine if it was a hoax or not, before finally launching the emergency response. President François Hollande will be awarded the 2016 “World Statesman Award” at a ceremony in New York on Monday for his “leadership in safeguarding democracy and freedom in a time of terrorist attacks” in France.
Hollande, who will already be in New York to attend a United Nations Security Council meeting, is being recognised not only for his “leadership” but also for “his contribution to global stability and security".
The prize, which is awarded by the New York-based interfaith Appeal of Conscience foundation, honours “individuals who support peace, prosperity, liberty and promote tolerance, human dignity and human rights, both in their own countries and inteationally through cooperation with other leaders”.

Just under 30 percent of France’s 3 to 4 million Muslims reject the country’s secular laws, according to an Ifop poll published by the French weekly Joual du Dimanche.
When asked if they considered the Islamic legal and moral code of sharia to be more important than the French Republic’s laws, 29 percent of respondents answered “yes.”
The poll found that 20 percent of male Muslim respondents and 28 percent of female Muslim respondents were in favour of the face veil, the niqab, and of the burqa which covers both face and body.
Another 60 percent said they were in favour of letting girls and women wear a head scarf at schools and universities which is forbidden at France’s secular public institutions.
Deadly attacks by Islamist militants, including bombings and shootings in Paris which killed 130 people last November and a truck attack in Nice killing more than 80 people in July, have raised tensions between communities in France.

Former French president Jacques Chirac, 83, was admitted to hospital on Sunday with a lung infection, his son-in-law said.
Chirac, who led France from 1995 to 2007, was “hospitalised this moing at Pitie-Salpetriere (hospital in Paris) to be treated for a lung infection,” Frederic Salat-Baroux told AFP, adding he would remain there “in the coming days.”
The popular ex-president had just retued from a visit to Morocco, Salat-Baroux added.
A source close to the former president confirmed that he was conscious.
Chirac, who served two terms as head of state, is probably best remembered inteationally for his opposition to the US military intervention in Iraq in 2003.
A small stroke while in office in 2005 weakened him, and he is now rarely seen in public.

A French union activist who lost an eye this week when protesters against labour reforms clashed with security forces said Saturday he was going to take legal against the police.
"I am going to file an official complaint myself. I will do everything to ensure justice is done," Laurent Theron, 46, told the BFM television news network.
The Solidaires union said in a statement that Theron had "apparently been struck by a fragment of a (tear gas) grenade fired by police."
"Unfortunately, despite the care he received in hospital he lost the use of his eye," the union said, adding that "nothing justified the use of force" against Theron.
The statement said that Theron had been talking with colleagues in Paris' Place de la Republique towards the end of the demonstration and that nothing in the vicinity posed a threat to the police.
The police "nevertheless charged with massive use of tear gas and stun grenades."

A 15-year-old French boy has been arrested in Paris and remanded in custody on suspicion of plotting a terrorist attack, a source close to the investigation said on Friday.
He is the third French 15-year-old in just five days to have been remanded in custody and placed under formal investigation for terrorism.
The arrests follow calls by the Islamic State (IS) group to attack soft targets in the West.
The boy, described as an A-grade student who denounced the November 13 terror attacks in Paris which left 130 people dead, was arrested Wednesday and remanded in custody on Friday over his links to a terrorist network. According to the source, the teen had been in touch with Rachid Kassim – a French member of the Islamic State (IS) group who is wanted by the police - via the encrypted message forum Telegram.
The teen expressed his willingness to carry out a terrorist atrocity to Kassim.

A Corsica court on Friday handed out prison sentences to five men over a mass beach brawl on the Mediterranean island, in a racially charged case that captured wide attention in France over the summer.
The violent brawl in August injured five people and prompted the mayor of the northe Corsican village of Sisco to ban the Islamic burkini swimsuit, which was initially thought to have been at the centre of the row. Around 100 police officers were deployed to quell the clashes.
Hundreds of people gathered outside the court in Bastia on Thursday to support two local men who faced charges over the incident alongside three brothers of Moroccan origin who grew up on another part of the French island.
Mustapha Benhaddou was sentenced to two years in prison for armed violence, while his brothers Abdelillah and Jamal both received suspended sentences of six months.

Clashes erupted on Thursday as thousands of demonstrators protesting against a controversial labour law took to the streets of Paris and cities across France. The interior ministry said 32 people had been arrested in coection with the violence.
France's main CGT union estimated that 40,000 people had tued out to protest in Paris by mid-afteoon. Police, however, put the figure much lower, saying between 12,500 and 13,500 tued out for the demonstration.
Unions said 170,000 were protesting across France. The interior ministry put the number of demonstrators at between 77,500 and 78,500, close to police estimates of 78,000.
“It’s begun, there are clashes going on between young demonstrators and CRS riot police,” FRANCE 24 joualist Julie Dungelhoeff reported from the Paris demonstration.
AFP reported that 15 police officers have been injured in the violence. Some 32 people have so far been arrested, according to the interior ministry.

Former French president Nicolas Sarkozy was likened to Donald Trump this week after the latest in a string of provocative statements that have pushed his presidential campaign ever further to the right.
The comparison with the Republican candidate for the White House, a notorious climate change sceptic, followed a speech on Wednesday in which Sarkozy appeared to question the extent of human involvement in global warming.
In remarks delivered at a business conference and relayed by his office, Sarkozy, who is having another shot at the French presidency after his failed re-election bid in 2012, claimed climate change was receiving too much attention.

German police Tuesday arrested three men with forged Syrian passports accused of being Islamic State (IS) group militants and labelled a possible "sleeper cell" with links to the November Paris attackers.
More than 200 police commandos took part in the pre-dawn raids in northe Germany to detain the men, who were suspected of either plotting an attack or awaiting orders to commit one.
The men were identified only as Mahir al-H., 17, Ibrahim M., 18, and Mohamed A., 26, in a statement issued by federal prosecutors.
They left Syria last October and travelled via Turkey and Greece -- a route used by tens of thousands of refugees and migrants -- and arrived in Germany in mid-November.

Alstom will go ahead with plans to shut down manufacturing at its historic Belfort plant, its CEO said on Tuesday, setting up a confrontation with President François Hollande who vowed that "everything will be done" to stop its closure.
The French engineering firm, which makes the country's famed TGV high-speed trains and is 20 percent controlled by the state, said last week it would stop making rolling stock at the factory in easte France, where its first steam locomotive was built back in 1880.
The move caused a political furore over the weekend and Hollande’s govement demanded the company reconsider.
The factory’s fate is set to become a hot-button issue as presidential hopefuls gear up for primaries ahead of elections next year, and France’s embattled president is expected to make a point of saving the Belfort site.

French MP Nathalie Kosciusko-Morizet is the only woman ruing in France’s right-wing presidential primaries. She is a long-shot candidate for the Elysée palace, struggling to shake her camp out of its obsession with identity politics and security.

For the 15th aiversary of the September 11 attacks in the United States, a French polling firm conducted a survey to gauge the impact of conspiracy theories among the French.
The main finding? According to polling firm Odoxa, the majority of French people believe that the full story of that day has yet to be revealed to the public.
Two thirds of those surveyed believe that key information has been hidden. That number gets higher the younger the respondents are, peaking with those under 25, 75 percent of whom believe facts are being withheld, as opposed to only 55 percent of those over 65.
The hijackers of the planes were identified as being linked to al Qaeda, but 45 percent of French people think that we still don’t know who was behind the attacks.
One of the most persistent conspiracy theories is that the Bush administration was somehow complicit in the attacks, to justify going to war in Iraq and Afghanistan, a belief held by 28 percent of those questioned in the poll.

French anti-terror judges on Saturday charged a woman over a failed attack near Paris' Notre Dame cathedral, where a car containing gas canisters was found last weekend.
The woman, named as 29-year-old Oella G., was remanded in custody after being charged with association with a terrorist group and attempted murder by an organised group, prosecutors said.
She had been known to security services for plaing to head to Syria.
Oella G. was arrested in southe France on Tuesday with her boyfriend, who has since been released.
According to investigators, her fingerprints were found in the Peugeot car which was discovered abandoned last Sunday a few hundred metres (yards) from Notre Dame with five gas cylinders and three bottles of diesel fuel inside.
A woman linked to Oella G. was also part of a suspected trio of women jihadists foiled by the authorities before they could carry out a fresh attack, investigators said.

French police on Friday aounced a new arrest in coection with an abandoned car found to contain gas cylinders in Paris over the weekend. The suspect is the boyfriend of a woman detained Thursday and is thought to have links to radical Islam.
The suspect was arrested late on Thursday and was already known to French intelligence services for having links to Islamist radicals, sources close to the investigation told AFP.
The suspect's brother is also in custody over his relationship with Larossi A., a jihadist who killed a police couple at their home in a Paris suburb in June, sources said.
The latest arrest came just hours after police arrested three women near a train station in Boussy-Saint-Antoine near Paris as part of the investigation into several gas canisters found in a car parked near Notre Dame Cathedral on Saturday.

Despite being bo blind, Sandrine Aurière-Martinet is one of the best judokas of her generation, wiing France’s first Paralympic gold in the Rio de Janeiro games on Thursday.
Aurière-Martinet, 33, took up judo at the age of 9. She says her heightened senses of hearing and touch are the key to her success.
"When I'm wearing my kimono, I can feel the wrinkles on the fabric. I can also hear and feel my opponent's every move, so I really don't need to see," she said.
Aurière-Martinet, who works as a physiotherapist when she is not competing, showed exceptional courage at the 2012 London games, battling on stoically despite breaking her ankle in the semi-final.
"The fact that she kept fighting for another minute with a broken ankle is amazing,” said her coach Antoine Hays. “Very few people have lived through that."
Her ankle may still be still weak, but that didn’t stop Aurière-Martinet from wiing the gold against German opponent Ramona Brussig in Rio.

Rescuers were bringing 33 people trapped oveight in cable cars high over the glaciers of Mont Blanc to an altitude station on Friday moing after the tangled cables were repaired, the cable car operator said.
Emergency workers had scrambled at first light on Friday to rescue the stranded, who included a child, after the ride jammed at 5.30 p.m. (1530 GMT) on Thursday.
More than 110 people were initially trapped on the 5 km (3 mile) ride between two mountain peaks at an altitude of over 3,000 metres (9,840 feet) when three cables snared.
In a statement, La Compagnie du Mont Blanc, which runs the cable car, gave no reason for the accident but said the cables could become tangled after an abrupt halt to the system or in strong winds.
Four helicopters rescued 65 people from the four-person cable cars before night fell over Mont Blanc, the highest mountain in the Alps. Another dozen people were evacuated during the night by rescuers using ropes.

President François Hollande delivered a key speech in Paris on Thursday in which he rejected the idea that the state should sacrifice civil liberties in the fight against terror and emphasised that French secularism is not incompatible with religion.
“The French Constitution is not a flexible text with ellipses or parentheses," Hollande said in his speech on “Democracy in the Face of Terrorism”.
“As president of the Republic, I vow that there will be no new laws that prove to be either overreactions or hastily imposed, or that would be as inapplicable as they are unconstitutional.”

Work on building a wall along the approach road to the French port of Calais to try to stop migrants from jumping aboard trucks bound for Britain will begin this month, British officials said Wednesday.
UK Immigration Minister Robert Goodwill told lawmakers that security was being stepped up in Calais, home to the “Jungle” camp, where thousands of migrants fleeing war and poverty in the Middle East and Africa hope to cross the English Chael to Britain.
The camp and a Franco-British border control deal that effectively pushes the British frontier onto mainland France have been hotly debated since Britons voted in a June referendum to leave the European Union.

A second couple was detained oveight in coection with an investigation into the weekend discovery of an abandoned car in central Paris that contained seven gas canisters, a French police source said Thursday.
The pair was picked up near Montargis, about 110 kilometres (65 miles) south of Paris.
Their detention raises to four the number of people held in coection with the suspect car, an abandoned Peugeot 607 that was parked several hundred metres from Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris.
The car, which had no registration plates, contained seven gas cylinders, one of them empty on the front passenger seat.
It was found over the weekend with its hazard lights flashing, as if to attract attention, two police officials said on Wednesday.
“We think he may have been trying to carry out a test-run,” one of the officials said.

The 47-year-old, who was appointed vice-president of the oil-rich Central African country earlier this year, will be tried by a Paris court on a spate of charges including corruption, money-laundering and embezzlement of public funds, sources close to the investigation told AFP news agency on Wednesday.
The court is yet to aounce a date for the trial, which is expected to take place without the defendant attending.
The charges were brought by Transparency Inteational, an anti-corruption campaign group that alleges several African leaders and their relatives spent state funds from their countries on lavish purchases in France.

Work on building a wall along the approach road to the French port of Calais to try to stop migrants from jumping aboard trucks bound for Britain will begin this month, British officials said Wednesday.
UK Immigration Minister Robert Goodwill told lawmakers that security was being stepped up in Calais, home to the “Jungle” camp, where thousands of migrants fleeing war and poverty in the Middle East and Africa hope to cross the English Chael to Britain.
The camp and a Franco-British border control deal that effectively pushes the British frontier onto mainland France have been hotly debated since Britons voted in a June referendum to leave the European Union.
Goodwill said the wall was part of a £17 million (20 million euros) package of security measures agreed by Britain and France in March.

A car containing several gas cylinders was discovered close to Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris over the weekend and its owner, who is now in custody, is on an intelligence services watchlist, police said Wednesday.
The Peugeot 607, which had no registration plates, contained seven gas cylinders, one of them empty on the front passenger seat.
It was found with its hazard lights flashing, as if to attract attention, two police officials said on Wednesday. “We think he may have been trying to carry out a test-run,” one of the officials said.
There was no detonating device present in the car, found on a Seine riverside stretch called the Quai de Montebello, metres from the Notre Dame Cathedral. Documents with writing in Arabic were also found in the car.
